Reel in the Bayou: Louisiana Lake Fishing Adventure

Get ready to cast your line into the heart of Louisiana's bayou country with Ron Ron Fishing Charters. This 6-hour trip on Barataria's tranquil waters is perfect for folks who want to mix some casual fishing with a hefty dose of nature watching. Whether you're looking to land your first redfish or snap photos of egrets stalking the shallows, this laid-back charter delivers a true taste of Louisiana's wild side.

What's Biting in the Bayou

Hop aboard and settle in for a day of easy-going angling in some of the richest fishing grounds this side of the Mississippi. We'll putter through a maze of grass-lined channels and open flats, dropping lines wherever the fish are biting. You might be reeling in a feisty redfish one minute and watching an osprey dive for its lunch the next. This ain't your grandpa's fast-paced fishing tournament - it's a chance to slow down and soak up the sights and sounds of the bayou while trying your luck for some of Louisiana's most prized catches.

Rods, Reels, and Relaxation

No need to lug your tackle box - we've got all the gear you'll need for a day on the water. We'll set you up with quality rods and reels, and show you the ropes if you're new to this kind of fishing. Most of our time will be spent drift fishing or anchored up in prime spots, using a mix of live bait and lures depending on what's working that day. You might find yourself tossing a popping cork for speckled trout or feeling the telltale thump of a black drum taking your bait off the bottom. And don't worry if you're not a pro - our guides are patient teachers who love nothing more than helping folks land their first big catch.

Why Folks Keep Coming Back

It's not just about the fish here (though they sure don't hurt). Our guests rave about the peaceful atmosphere and the chance to see Louisiana's wild side up close. Photographers love the golden light on the marsh grass and the way pelicans skim across the water at sunset. Nature buffs get a kick out of spotting gators sunning themselves on logs or watching roseate spoonbills wading in the shallows. And for many, it's simply a chance to unplug and spend quality time with family or friends, swapping stories and enjoying the simple pleasure of a day on the water.

The Local Lineup: Fish You'll Want to Hook

Redfish: These copper-colored bruisers are the star of the show in Louisiana's coastal waters. Known for their powerful runs and distinctive spot near the tail, redfish (also called red drum) can grow to over 40 pounds, though most catches are in the 5-10 pound range. They love to cruise the shallow flats and will happily munch on live shrimp or chase down a well-placed artificial lure. Fall is prime time for reds, but you can catch them year-round in the Barataria area.

Speckled Trout: Don't let the name fool you - these spotted beauties are actually members of the drum family. Specks are prized for their delicate flavor and willingness to strike at lures. They tend to school up, so when you find one, you've often found a bunch. Spring and fall are peak seasons, but winter can offer some great action too if you know where to look. Drift fishing with live shrimp under a popping cork is a local favorite technique.

Black Drum: The redfish's less flashy cousin, black drum can grow to enormous sizes - we're talking over 100 pounds for the big boys. Most of what we catch are more manageable "puppy drums" in the 5-20 pound range. These bottom-feeders love crabs and shrimp, and put up a great fight on light tackle. They're around all year, but really start biting as the water warms up in spring.

Sheepshead: With their distinctive black and white stripes and sheep-like teeth, these fish are unmistakable. They're notorious bait stealers, using those chompers to pick crabs and barnacles off pilings and oyster reefs. Landing a big sheepshead takes finesse and patience, but the reward is some of the best eating fish in the Gulf. Winter and early spring are prime sheepshead season.

Southern Flounder: These masters of camouflage lie flat on the bottom, waiting to ambush passing prey. Flounder fishing takes a bit of skill, as you need to detect their subtle bite and set the hook quickly. But once hooked, they put up a spirited fight and make for some mighty fine eating. Fall is the best time to target flounder as they move towards the Gulf to spawn.

A Day in the Life on the Bayou

Your adventure kicks off bright and early at our Barataria dock. After a quick safety briefing and gear check, we'll ease out into the misty morning waters. The first hour or so is all about soaking in the sunrise and keeping an eye out for wildlife stirring along the banks. Your guide will share stories about the area's history and point out landmarks as we make our way to the day's fishing spots.

Once we start fishing, it's a laid-back affair. We might drift along a channel edge, tossing lures towards likely looking spots, or anchor up on a flat and let out some live bait. There's plenty of time between casts to snap photos, watch for birds, or just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Your guide will be on hand to offer tips, help land fish, and make sure everyone's having a good time.

As the day heats up, we might duck into a shady bayou for a break and a chance to cool off. It's a perfect time for a snack (don't forget to pack some drinks and munchies) and to swap fish tales. In the afternoon, we'll hit a few more spots before starting to make our way back. Keep your camera ready - the golden hour light on the marsh grass is something special.

What to Bring for a Day on the Bayou

While we provide all the fishing gear, there are a few things you'll want to pack to make the most of your day: - Sunscreen and a hat (the Louisiana sun can be fierce) - Polarized sunglasses to cut glare and spot fish - Light, long-sleeved clothing for sun protection - Non-slip, closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops, please) - Snacks and drinks (no glass containers) - Camera or smartphone for photos - Any medications you might need - A small cooler if you want to keep your catch (we provide ice)

Conservation and Keeping it Wild

At Ron Ron Fishing Charters, we're passionate about preserving the incredible ecosystem that makes our fishing possible. We practice catch-and-release for most species, especially during spawning seasons. If you do want to keep a few for dinner, we'll make sure they're within legal limits and sized right for the healthiest impact on fish populations. Part of the joy of this trip is experiencing the untamed beauty of the bayou, so we always leave it cleaner than we found it. Don't be surprised if your guide asks for help snagging any litter we spot floating by - it's all part of being good stewards of these amazing waters.

Learn more about the species

Black Drum

Black Drum are the big cousins of Redfish, usually weighing 5-30 pounds but can hit 90 pounds. You'll find them in brackish waters and estuaries, especially around oyster beds and mudflats. Spring's the hot time to target them when they school up to spawn. These fish are fun to catch – they put up a good fight and make a distinct drumming sound. The smaller ones under 15 pounds are best for eating, with a nice mild flavor. To catch Black Drum, use fresh crab or shrimp on the bottom. A good local tip is to look for them tailing in shallow water during high tide. Just remember, they've got powerful jaws that can crush oysters, so use strong hooks and leader.

Black Drum

Redfish

Redfish, or Red Drum, are one of our most popular inshore species. They typically range from 20-30 inches in the bays, but can grow much larger offshore. You'll find them in shallow waters, often tailing in water so skinny their backs are exposed. Fall is prime time when they school up, but you can catch them year-round. Anglers love sight-casting to tailing reds and the strong fight they put up. They're also great eating when slot-sized. To catch them, try gold spoons, soft plastics, or live bait like mullet or crabs. A local tip: look for them cruising the edges of grass flats on incoming tides. And don't forget to check for that signature black spot near the tail – some reds have multiple spots!

Redfish

Sea Trout

Sea Trout, also called Speckled Trout, are a favorite target in our coastal waters. They usually run 14-24 inches and prefer shallow grass flats and deeper channels depending on the season. Fall and spring are prime times when they're actively feeding. Anglers love their aggressive strikes and the sporty fight they put up on light tackle. They're also excellent table fare with delicate, flaky meat. To catch Sea Trout, try live shrimp under a popping cork or soft plastic lures worked slowly. A local tip: look for them around underwater lights at night – they'll stack up to feed on bait attracted by the glow. Just remember to release the big ones over 20 inches, as they're typically female breeders.

Sea Trout

Sheepshead

Sheepshead are those funny-looking fish with human-like teeth and black stripes that earned them the nickname "convict fish." They typically run 1-8 pounds and hang around structure like docks, bridges, and oyster reefs. Winter and early spring are prime times to target them as they gather to spawn. Anglers love the challenge of catching these bait stealers – you've got to be quick on the hook set. They're also great eating, with sweet white meat. For best results, use small hooks with live bait like fiddler crabs or pieces of shrimp. Here's a local tip: scrape some barnacles off the pilings to chum them up. Just watch out for those sharp dorsal spines when you're handling them.

Sheepshead

Southern Flounder

Southern Flounder are unique flatfish with both eyes on their left side. They typically range from 15-18 inches, but can grow up to 33 inches. You'll find them in shallow coastal waters, bays, and estuaries, often buried in sandy or muddy bottoms. Fall is prime time for catching these ambush predators as they move offshore to spawn. Anglers love targeting flounder for their tasty white meat and the challenge of hooking them. They're notorious bait stealers, so be ready to set the hook quickly. For best results, use live bait like mullet or shrimp and fish it slowly along the bottom. A local trick is to look for depressions in the sand – that's where flounder like to hide and wait for prey to swim by.
